On May 31, 1859, Big Ben, the great bell clock tower in London, went into operation. The clock is located at the Palace of Westminster and has become one of the icons of the capital city of London. The clock tower serves as the backdrop for many famous movie scenes that take place in London. It has also served as the inspiration for many photographs, paintings, drawings and other pieces of art.
